Sustainability and Community

We’re deeply proud to be part of the Thakeham community and care about preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us. Our sustainability ethos is simple: tread lightly, support local, and avoid waste wherever possible.

16TH CENTURY WEST SUSSEX PUB

History of The White Lion Inn

The White Lion Inn was built in the Mid 1500s
The oldest beams date back to the late 1300s, with the original coaching inn structure built during the reign of Henry VIII, around the 1540s

In the 1700s–1800s
It becomes a key coaching inn on Thakeham’s High Street, rebuilding and refronting around 1800, and operating as a posting house by mid 18th century

Around 1850s–1880s
Landlord Bartholomew Wilson runs the Inn for many years; local newspapers note lively incidents—including breaking up counterfeit coin fraud and participating in civic innovation

On the 9th of May 1980
The White Lion Inn is officially designated a Grade II listed building, recognising its architectural and historical importance

After the death of beloved long-time landlord Bill Newton in 2000, the pub temporarily closed.  A passionate “Stop – Save Thakeham’s Only Pub” campaign by the village saved it and secured its reopening.

In 2013 The White Lion Inn was Named CAMRA’s Country Pub of the Year, cementing its reputation for traditional ales and heritage charm.

Between August 2020 and March 2022
The Pub closed again for 18 months, causing concern among locals for the future of the village’s heart once again.

12th of October 2022
The White Lion Reopened its doors under Michelin-trained hospitality duo Ashley Chapman and Julia Sullivan, who infused the venue with fresh energy, authentic warmth, and culinary excellence, inspired by their storied backgrounds.

WHITE LION RETURNS TO THAKEHAM

Historic Pub Reopens

As soon as Ashley and Julia re-opened the doors, locals began to share the White Lion’s legacy through treasured memories and recovered artefacts. There was discussion that over 1,000 locals and members of the public entered back through the doors of The White Lion on this day and this historic pub was back at the heart of the community.

“There was a missing plaque on the bar… in honour of a dog called Scrappy. The plaque has since been returned and is back in its old spot.”

Other guests and locals brought in old pictures, tankards, and even gin glasses, one of which being the pubs local reverend at St. Marys church only a two-minute walk away.  Objects that once adorned the walls, reaffirming that the pub and its community are inextricably intertwined.

Visited for a date night with my partner and our dog, and we had an incredible time! Food was delicious and the service was fantastic, would gladly visit again. It's worth noting that while the menu doesn't list any allergens, the staff are very accommodating and many of the dishes can be made/altered to suit.

Fabulous pub. Great food - especially the Sunday lunch. Excellent service from staff and a well kept fire in the winter. Really nice and hard working chef. Dog friendly too. What’s not to like 🤷‍♂️

Have just discovered The White Lion. A joy! Down a chocolate box lane to find an idyllic pub. Wonderfully welcoming staff. Booked a roast for Sunday...sumptuous! Many sat out in the warmth of spring sunshine. The very best of W. Sussex. I shall return repeatedly!
